Ahhhhhhhhh! Our Fabulous Celebratory New Year

From Gileann:
Hello everybody! Well, I hope all of you had a wonderful New Year's celebration because my family's was, well, what you would call... eccentric.

So we were watching Dick Clark's Rocking New Year's thing, and we were ready with our 12 grapes and our huge smiles, ready to hug and congratulate each other on the new year. I guess Josh and I got a spontaneous jittery feeling- as in, we thought that we should practice stuffing grapes in our mouths just to check if they would fit. So after much practicing, we were stuffed full of fruit, leaving the actual 'Happy New Year' moment kind of dry, taking into account that no one else was really very enthusiastic.

I kind of sarcastically attempted to lighten up the mood with a very dull and very forced 'yay', but that didn't really help out much. Hey, I guess our family just isn't the excited type when we're stuck in Idaho all by our lonesome.

To us, that night was pretty much the same as any other. We played Man Bites Dog, and watched movies, and played video games.

Well I guess the "celebratoriness" was just not with us. Not to say that it was a bad night (fabuloso really) but just not different.

I hope you guys enjoyed and savored that midnight as much as we did.

  3. Practicing fitting grapes in our mouths is definitely something we should've done. But we were just finishing up our game and we only had about 3 minutes left before midnight.
And mum got these really huge grapes too. So I could only fit 5 or 6 in my mouth and they were so big and juicy that when I bit them I nearly choked.
So that's what I was doing for the first 10 seconds of 2009; choking on grape juice.

  5. WTF your friends have never heard of or tried cramming as much grapes in your mouth for new years? Lemme guess, they never heard of wearing red polka dot robes, throwing coins, jumping as high as you can and playing with fire crackers either?

JFYI our family isn't weird, just be proud of the fact that we learned all those new years eve tradition from Mama Geny and Lolo Julio (Which is now in it's 3rd generation). 1st Generation = Mama Geny & Lolo Julio. 2nd Generation = my dad (Your Ninong Jun) and his 4 siblings and their respective spouses. 3rd Generation is me, my wife, my 3 siblings (and partners) and all my paternal side cousins (and partners). Actually now that I think of it, all these traditions has now gone to it's 4th generation (Since Maddie has somewhat of an idea what's going on)and hopefully in 2 or 3 years time Levi is going to learn it too.

  6. lol yeah i was totally being sarcastic when i said we are "weird"...i TOTALLY love our traditions! its what makes our family so special! and its CRAZY to imagine that yes, we are already passing this stuff down to the fourth generation. hopefully we can continue it on for like, 50 generations.

to keep it documented for generations to come, lets document some of our family history here, eh? :D

p.s. like with "pwned", i hope none of the elders ask what wtf stands for lol

p.p.s. i say wtf stands for "whoa there, fanny"

p.p.p.s. now that i think about it...wasn't there something a REALLY long time ago in canada about kuya jc calling tootie fanny? or us younger ones calling each other fanny? i can't recall, someone help me...

  7. While growing up I never really questioned the whole cramming 13 grapes in your mouth thing. But once I entered the double digit ages and noticed how nobody else I knew outside the family did it, and then I started to think it was a weird quirky tradition. But then again, I am also quite proud of this odd and one of a kind custom our family has XD
I actually just went and did a google search of this traditional custom and I got several results stating that in Spain it is customary to eat 12 grapes on New Year's Eve. However, there tradition differs from ours. For one they eat 12 grapes, where for some odd reason we eat 13. And secondly, they eat theres one by one in the 60 seconds of 12:00. I think it's more fun to just have them in your mouth and have bulging cheeks waiting for the clock to strike midnight.

Ate Cayeene, in responds to your p.p.p.s. I definitely do not remember calling other people fannies. lol

  9. Ok now you guys are making me feel and look old! What is "FANNY" suppose to mean?

I sure don't remember anybody being called that. But I do remember JC calling Tootie "Sailor Moon", JR calling Maan "Maanus", and Jovy calling JR "Butch Titoy". And if my memory serves me correctly, Jaydee called Tootie "James Pwetrick" and Tootie returned the favor by calling Jaydee "Juan Rica-Fart"

  10. I sooooooooooooo remember Kuya Toots being called fanny. Ahhhhhh, good times:D

'Whoa there, fanny'. Haha. I actually just said it out loud, and I think I like that better than the real meaning of WTF.

    Pwetrick and Ricafart. hahahahahaha.

  11. You guys still haven't answered my question. What does "FANNY" mean? Sorry if I'm too old, and sometimes cannot understand your internet linggo.

Anyway any other suggestions to what "WTF" means? Besides of corse the real meaning of those three letters "What The ______"

So far, I have two: 'Whoa there, family' and 'Whoa there, fanny'

Well if you ask me, I will tell you that those three letters can mean either

"WHOLE TAN FAMILY" OR "WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY"

    Hahahahaha LMAO!

  12. hope no one asks what that means...
